Alan Uecker is the wonderful man behind True North Maps. Alan and several of his cartographer buddies have scoured the Lonesome Dove books to locate places associated with the series.
Keeping in mind that Lonesome Dove author Larry McMurtry grew up not far from Goodnight, Texas, worked on his uncles ranch just 5 miles north of Goodnight and heard the stories of Charles Goodnight, Oliver Loving, Bose Ikard and others, he seems to have associated real places with historically fictional characters in his books.
