Garretson was one of the "saviors" of the American bison. In 1938 he wrote the seminal work on bison - "The American Bison".
A charter member of the original American Bison Society and curator of the National Museum of Heads and Horns (now part of the Smithsonian). He was inducted into the National Bison Association Hall of Fame in 1985.
