From the Book Hoard: We were unsure as to whether to keep or offer this volume for sale. First, it's scarcer than hens teeth (or hair on my head). Second is that the map is so absolutely unique the way it is made in two parts and then folded to sit inside the book. And the story (which some have derided as part fiction) is a well and beautifully told tale. If it's true, or partly true, or just imagination doesn't bother me. The Mississippi River does exist; does captivate and stimulate both sight and sound. Then, we found two more copies; both in better shape than the first one. So, for the moment, all 3 are for sale
I fished the Mississippi a few years back, from a shore anchored barge across the Mighty Water from Trempealeau Wisconsin on the Minnesota side. Barge owner came across to fetch us in his relatively small boat. We were just a bit downstream from Lock and Dam 6, at mile 714.1.
The map is as interesting as the text. I did get it reproduced and our friends at Jones Press has a field day getting it done. That's it tacked on my wall (by a little book display). It has become "the" conversation piece .... and had several folk take a while to look through the book itself. This is great history and education. Mississippi 1887 Map Reproduction
