BOOKS - Ronson Page's two historic finds for March 6, 2025
$150.00
This first is a small tome, "The Manual of Heraldry" (1929). The boards are attached, but the hinges are in rough shape -- I can do some repair work with archival tools (can discuss before purchase, please) -- the pages however are all crisp & white, with minimal foxing. $150
Heraldry is a discipline relating to the design, display and study of armorial bearings/armory... a coat of arms on a shield, helmet & crest. The author is Sir Francis James Grant KCVO WS (1863–1953), a Scottish officer of arms who eventually rose to the office of Lord Lyon King of Arms and Secretary of the Order of the Thistle.[1] He was made a Knight Commander of the Royal Victorian Order in 1935.
The second book I was really excited to find. Long before Indian Jones, there was Allan Quartermain, the adventurer hero of many stories by H Rider Haggard, the most famous of which is "King Soloman's Mines".
This short novel I found is titled "Maiwa's Revenge" (1888) and this is its original magazine appearance, months before it was published in book form... this is as "first edition" as it gets! Great story, too... Quartermain is on a hunting expedition in Africa, and avenges the death of Princess Maiwa's baby by joining an attack on the village responsible.
Lots and lots of other interesting reads in this bound volume. $350
